Brain must perform the very first day of life - amazing!

You may not think much about how your brain operates since we have a tendency to take it for granted.. like we do when it comes to the heart and it’s tasks and efficiencies.

Take the brain for example, do you realize how quickly it filters through information without giving much conscious thought about it? For example, as you go through your day.. what sights, sounds, and smells are more important than others? Which ones must not be missed?

And have you considered how to make sense of complex visual patterns and build a database (internally) of familiar people and places? How do you choose what stimuli to distract you? Your brain works quickly to pick and choose “what” will take you away from the “current focus” and attention.

Now this will get your brain reeling.. consider, for a moment the importance of our language skills. As we  communicate an idea while talking, our brains run ahead of us searching for “the right” words to use. If you’re like me, I have not built a rich search skill that helps me quickly select the most effective way to describe my ideas.. that keep people intrigued.

So, what does that say about my brain?

  3. Please support HR 3043 which will extend Medicare to pay for adult day services:

We urge you to support HR 3043, the Medicare Adult Day Care Services Act. Adult day services keep families together by providing a far less expensive alternative to at-home care and nursing homes (average $60/day vs $85/$195, respectively). Adult day centers (ADCs) play an important role in maintaining and improving the quality of life of both the older adults and their caregivers. ADCs have a critical role in providing a range of services
for older adults, and they also support caregivers, allowing their care recipients to remain in their homes for longer periods. While ADC has been in existence for three decades, there is a lack of extensive quantitative research on its impact on other positive outcomes besides delaying nursing home entry, such as lowering emergency department utilization and hospital admissions.

    Issue:
    · A recent New England Journal of Medicine article reported that 20 percent of Medicare beneficiaries who were discharged from the hospital were readmitted within 30 days, and that 12 percent of those re-admissions were preventable.

    · The number of older adults in the United States is dramatically growing and this population, including the 78 million aging baby boomers, will require more cost-effective, quality-oriented, community-based options.

    · The number of caregivers who work and care for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, and other types of dementia, is growing, yet there are only a few post-acute options that help these caregivers continue their valuable work. Adult day services allow them to continue their work by providing comprehensive health and social services to the elderly and disabled and respite care to family caregivers.

    Solution:
    · The Medicare Adult Day Services Act of 2009 allows Medicare beneficiaries to use adult day service programs that are certified, licensed, or accredited under an approved accreditation agency to provide post-acute services under Medicare.

    · Medicare adult day services agencies would be required to provide the same services, and follow the same strict regulations under the prospective payment system and conditions of participation as Medicare-certified home health agencies.

    · The Medicare Adult Day Services Act of 2009 would require Medicare adult day service programs to collect and submit the same quality data as Medicare-certified home health agencies.

    · The Medicare Adult Day Services Act of 2009 would allow Medicare adult day service programs to be reimbursed at 98 percent of the Medicare-certified home health rate thus saving Medicare dollars.

    · Medicare beneficiaries will be able to receive more services and hours of care for a lower, all-inclusive rate than is currently available through post acute providers. Services covered in the bundled adult day services rate would include: nursing, physical, occupational and speech therapy, social services, personal care, as well as meals, transportation, and recreational activities.

Please support this bill, and the millions of seniors and their caregivers and families who would benefit. Thank you very much!
